Indigenous Interviewing

While we would not claim that NTF has core expertise, we have conducted studies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health for the Queensland Department of Health.

This work involved detailed observation and interviewing on Thursday Island and in community health centres on other smaller islands in the Torres Strait as well as the Aboriginal Health Centre in Inala as well as extremely sensitive work on Stradbroke Island, which the participants thanked us for as it gave them an opportunity to have their stories listened to attentively.

This work involved interviews with both indigenous health providers and health customers.

As preparation for this work, Joan Nelson completed the Queensland Health Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness Training. Through the unofficial networks she has gained acceptance across a wide range of family groups.
